The "Ainoko-ho-shida" (Thelypteris sp.) belongs to the family Thelypteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Izu Peninsula of Honshu southwards to Shikoku, Kyushu, Ryukyu Islands in Japan, as well as Taiwan and China. It is thought to be an interspecific hybrid between the "Ho-shida" (Thelypteris acuminata) and the "Ke-ho-shida" (Thelypteris parasitica). It can be found in areas where both parents grow together and is 60-110 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnate compound, green, slightly shiny, and papery. The leaf surfaces and midribs are hairy. The sorus is attached midway between the margins and midrib.
