The "Ai-inomoto-so" (Pteris x pseudosefuricola) belongs to the family Pteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Kanto district and westward to Chugoku district of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows rather sparsely in lowland forests and on stone walls, and grows 20 to 40 cm tall. It is thought to be a hybrid between "Spider brake" and "Cretan brake fern". Morphologically, it is between the two species, but it resembles the "Spider brake" more. Characteristically, it is winged to the second pinna. The Japanese name "Sefuri-inomoto-so", which had been used previously, was changed to "Ai-inomoto-so" because this hybrid species is not found in the Sefuri mountain range in Sawara-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture and is therefore not appropriate.
