"Aizu-shimotsuke" (Spiraea chamaedryfolia var. pilosa) belongs to the Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido, to the south, Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu, and northeastern Asia. This tree grows in the sunny places of the mountainous area and its height is 1-1.5 m. The leaves are broad ovate to narrow ovate, with sharp tips and indented duplicato-serratus edges. The small white flowers come in the corymbs of terminal branchs from May to June. There are about 40 stamens, which protrude from the petals. The fruits are spherical follicles and ripen from August to September.
