台湾の北中部の固有種です。標高９００〜１２００メートルの山地に生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。葉は楕円状披針形から長楕円状披針形で革質です。４月から５月ごろ、茎頂に白色の花を７〜１０個咲かせます。花冠は漏斗形で先端が５裂し、その上側内面には、赤色の斑があります。雄しべは１０個あります。台湾華語では「南湖杜鵑」、中国名は「微笑杜鵑（Wei xiao du juan）」。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の常緑低木で、学名は Rhododendron hyperythrum。英名 Nan-hu Rhododendron。

The Nan-hu Rhododendron (Rhododendron hyperythrum) belongs to Ericacea (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is endemic to north-central Taiwan. This tree grows in mountains at 900-1200 m altitude, and can reach 2-4 m in height. The leaves are elliptic-lanceolate to oblong-lanceolate and leathery. The 7-10, white flowers bloom atop of stems from April to May. The corolla is funnel-shaped with five partite tips and has red mottles on the inside of upper part. The flower has ten stamens. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "南湖杜鵑" and its Chinese name is "微笑杜鵑" (wei xiao du juan).
