「ふよう（Hibiscus mutabilis）」と「アメリカふよう（Hibiscus moscheutos）」との種間交雑種です。大阪市立大学付属植物園の立花吉茂氏によって作出されました。開花期が長く、真っ赤な花を夏から晩秋まで咲かせます。葉柄や花柄も赤褐色をしているのが特徴です。ただし、両親の染色体数が異なるため不稔性だそうです。

アオイ科フヨウ属の落葉低木で、学名は Hibiscus mutabilis cv. Rubra。英名はありません。

"Akabana-fuyo" (Hibiscus mutabilis cv. Rubra) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an interspecific hybrid between Cotton rose hibiscus (Hibiscus mutabilis) and Swamp rose mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos). This hybrid was breeded by Yoshishige Tachibana (Botanical Gardens Faculty of Science Osaka City University). It has long flower season and bloom bright red flowers from summer to late fall. It is defined by reddish-brown petioles and peduncles. This hybrid is sterile because of the parents have different chromosome numbers.
