The "Akame-gashiwa" (Mallotus japonicus) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is ditributed to Hanshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and southern China. This tree grows in hillsides and can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are ovate or broad-ovate and alternate. It is dioecious. The panicles are borne on the terminal branches and bloom non-petaled flowers from June to July. The Japanese name "Akame-gashiwa" comes from the red color of the shoots and new leaves. It also has another name, "Meshimori-na", because it was used to serve food in the old days, just like the leaves of "Japanese emperor oak". In the photo, 2nd one is the male flower and 3rd one is the female flower. It is called "野桐" in Taiwanese Chinese and "野梧桐" (ye wu tong) in Chinese.
