わが国の沖縄群島、それに台湾やアジア南部、オーストラリア北部、オセアニア、アフリカ南部、北アメリカ南西部に分布しています。日当たりのいい荒地や草地に生え、高さは１．５メートルまでになります。稈は束生し、上向きまたは斜上します。葉身は披針形で、葉の基部から葉鞘にかけて毛があります。稈の先端に、単生の長さ３〜６センチの総状花序をだします。上部１０個の小穂は対になり、１個は有柄、もう１個は無柄です。また、基部の３〜１０個の小穂は雄性または無性です。台湾華語では「黄茅」。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科アカヒゲガヤ属の多年草で、学名は Heteropogon contortus (syn. Andropogon contortus)。英名は Black speargrass, Tanglehead。

The Black speargrass (Heteropogon contortus) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Japan's Okinawa Archipelago, Taiwan, southern Asia, northern Australia, Oceania, southern Africa, and southwestern North America. It grows in sunny wastelands and grasslands and grows up to 1.5 m tall. The culms grow in bunches and are ascending or oblique. The leaf blades are lanceolate and hairy from the leaf base to the leaf sheath. At the tip of the culm is a single, 3-6 cm long, raceme-shaped inflorescence. The upper 10 spikelets are in pairs, one petiolated and the other sessile. The basal 3 to 10 spikelets are male or asexual. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "黄茅". It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
