It is a tall semi-evergreen tree that is distributed from Okinawa in Japan to Southeast Asia, Australia and Polynesia. This tree will be about 20 m in height and will be planted as roadside trees in tropical and subtropical areas. The leaves are trifoliate with long petioles. The leaflets are ovate to ovate-elliptic with a slightly caudal tip. It is dioecious, and the panicles are borne on the upper axils and bloom small petalless flowers from February to March. The Japanese name comes from the reddish-brown bark.
