"Akamino-inu-tsuge" (Ilex sugerokii var. brevipedunculata) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small evergreen tree that is ditributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan. This tree grows in sub-alpine screes or near moors, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are elliptic, glossy and alternate. The small white flowers bloom on the axils from June to July. The fruits are round and ripen in red with peduncles 1-2 cm long.
