わが国の各地をはじめ、世界の温帯から熱帯地域に広く分布する「かたばみ」の一品種です。乾燥した砂礫などに生え、高さは１０センチほどになります。茎は地面を這って広がり、葉は３出複葉で、３個の小葉はハート形です。葉は「かたばみ」よりも小さく、暗い赤紫色をしています。５月から１０月ごろ、咽に赤みを帯びた黄色い花を咲かせます。

カタバミ科カタバミ属の多年草で、学名は Oxalis corniculata f. rubrifolia。英名は Red-leaved yellow sorrel, Red-leaved creeping woodsorrel。

The red-leaved yellow sorrel (Oxalis corniculata f. rubrifolia) belongs to Oxalidaceae (the Wood sorrel family). It is a perennial herb that is one of the "yellow sorrel" forms widely distributed in temperate and tropical regions of the world, including Japan. This herb grows on dry gravel and the height is about 10 cm. The stem crawls across the ground, the leaves are trifoliate, and the three leaflets are heart-shaped. The leaves are smaller than "yellow sorrel" and have a dark magenta color. The yellow flowers with reddish tinged throat come from May to October.
