コスタリカからボリビアに分布しています。山地や高原に生え、高さは20メートル以上になります。樹皮は、赤みを帯びます。葉は広楕円形で濃緑色、対生します。花は白色から淡紅紫色で、枝先の円錐花序につきます。この樹皮は、解熱剤とくにマラリアの予防や治療に有効なキニーネの生産に使用されます。
アカネ科キナノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Cinchona succirubra。英名は Peruvian bark。
Peruvian bark (Cinchona succirubra) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed southward from Costa Rica to Bolivia. This tree grows in mountains or highlands and can reach up to 20 m in height. The barks are tinged red. The leaves are broad elliptic, dark green and opposite. The flowers are white to pale magenta and bloom in the terminal panicles. This barks are used for the production of quinine, which is an anti-fever agent especially useful in the prevention and treatment of malaria.
