The Cup lichen (Cladonia pleurota) belongs to the family Cladoniaceae. It is a lichen that is distributed from Hokkaido to Honshu and Shikoku in Japan, and from cool temperate zones to subarctic zones in the world. It grows on the ground in lowlands and alpine zones and is 1 to 3 cm tall. The podetia is yellowish gray-green to gray-green, hollow, unbranched, and erect, forming a club-shaped cup 4 to 10 mm in diameter with a trumpet-shaped tip. The ascocarp (the organ that produces the ascospores) are red and attached to the rim of the cup or at the tip of a thick stalk extending from the rim of the cup.
