The "Akamono" (Gaultheria adenothrix) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed to Hokkaido, the Japan Sea side of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan. This shrub grows in montane to sub-alpine forest edges, and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The leaves are ovate and arranged alternately. The white bell-shaped bloom at upper axils from June to July. The fruits ripen red, sweet and edible.
