ブラジルが原産です。高温多湿を好む植物で、高さは２０〜４５センチになります。葉は披針形で、緑色や赤色それに紅紫色などをしています。園芸品種も多く、「せんにちこう（千日紅）」のような、白い花を咲かせます。
写真中２・中３は、園芸品種の「リトルルビー（cv. Little Ruby）」、
中７・下は「リトルロマンス（cv. Little Romance）」。

ヒユ科ツルノゲイトウ属の多年草で、学名は Alternanthera dentata (syn. Alternanthera brasiliana)。英名は Joseph's coat、Brazilian joyweed。

The Joseph's coat (Alternanthera dentata) belongs to Amaranthaceae (the Amaranth family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Brazil. It is a plant that prefers heat and humidity, and can reach 20-45 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, green, red and magenta. There are many cultivars, and white flowers such as "Globe amaranth" come in bloom. The 3rd & 4th photos are a cultivar 'Little Ruby', and 8th and bottom photos are 'Little Romance'.
