"Akebono-shusu-ran" (Goodyera foliosa var. maximowicziana) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and the southern Kuril Islands. It grows in forests in mountainous areas. The stems crawl obliquely on the ground and are 5 to 10 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-elliptic and alternate, and around August to September, short racemes of pale red flowers are produced at the top of the stem. The labellum is pouch-like and hairy on the inside. In Taiwanese, it is called "童山白蘭".
