わが国の本州、中部地方から近畿地方に分布しています。山地の木陰に生え、高さは２０〜５０センチになります。葉は三角状ほこ形で対生し、鋸歯と長い柄があります。８月から１０月ごろ、枝先に紫色の唇形花を咲かせます。花冠の外面には細かい毛があり、萼にも毛があります。雌しべは長く、花冠の外に突き出しています。和名は、秋に咲き、花の形が「きり（桐）」に似ていることから。

シソ科アキギリ属の多年草で、学名は Salvia glabrescens。英名はありません。

"Aki-giri" (Salvia glabrescens) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Chubu district to Kinki district on Hanshu. The herb grows in mountainous tree-shaded areas and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The leaves are deltoid-hastate and opposite with toothed edges and long petioles. The purple labiate flowers bloom on the terminal branches from August to October. The fine hairs are borne on the outsided of corolla and calyces. The pistiles are long and protruded from the corolla.
