ロシアのシベリア南部が原産のようです。１６世紀ごろから栽培されていたといいます。「たちあおい（立葵）」の仲間で、高さは１．５〜１．８メートルになります。よく分枝して、葉は「いちじく（無花果）」のように掌状に分裂します。６月から８月ごろ、黄色から白色の花を咲かせます。

アオイ科タチアオイ属の多年草で、学名は Alcea ficifolia。英名は Figleaf hollyhock、Antwerp hollyhock。

The Figleaf hollyhock (Alcea ficifolia) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a perennial herb that is seems to be native to southern Siberia in Russia and has been cultivated since around the 16th century. It is a member of the "Hollyhock" family and grows 1.5 to 1.8 m tall. It is well branched and the leaves are palmately divided like a "fig". It produces yellow to white flowers from June to August.
