マダガスカル島の固有種で、南部から南西部に分布しています。樹木状になり、高さは１８メートルにもなります。幹は分枝しますが、ときに柱状にもなります。たくさんの棘が生えています。葉は楕円形で、毎年おなじところからでます。高さ３メートルを越えた頃から、枝先に黄白色の花を咲かせます。園芸上は、「ありゅうぼく（亜竜木）」と呼ばれます。

カナボウノキ科アルアウディア属の小低木で、学名は Alluaudia procera。英名は Madagascan ocotillo。

The Madagascan ocotillo (Alluaudia procera) belongs to the family Didiereaceae. It is a shrub that is endemic to Madagascar and is found in the southern and southwestern parts of the island. It is arboreal, reaching a height of up to 18 m. The trunk is branched and sometimes columnar. It has many spines. The leaves are elliptic and grow from the same place every year. Yellowish-white flowers bloom at the tips of the branches when it is over 3 m tall. Horticulturally, it is called "Aryu-boku" in Japan.
