The Round-headed leek (Allium sphaerosepalum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout most of Europe, plus North Africa and West Asia. The bulbs are small and ovate, and the gray-green, hollow, linear leaves are produced in spring in clusters. From early summer to summer, it produces a thin, 60-90 cm long scape that produces small flowers in spherical to ovoid umbels. Individual flowers turn from dark green to rose-purple as they mature. Its flowers may be replaced by bulbils, and small bulblets may also form under the outer layer of the stem. When growing this plant, be aware of its potential to become invasive. The specific epithet comes from the ancient Greek word for "spherical head."
