中央アジアと南西アジアに分布しています。標高１５００〜２５００メートルの岩場に生え、高さは６０〜１５０センチになります。４〜６個ある根生葉は、幅広い紐状で、緑色から灰色がかった緑色、さまざまな毛が生えます。葉は通常、開花するころには枯れています。初夏から夏のはじめ、花茎を伸ばして、大きな散形花序にふじ色から紫色の花を咲かせます。白花の品種も知られています。写真は園芸品種の「マウントエベレスト（cv. Mount Everest）」。

The Persian shallot (Allium stipitatum) belongs to Lilaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is found in Central and Southwest Asia. It grows on rocky shores at elevations between 1500 and 2500 m and grows 60 to 150 cm tall. The 4 to 6 basal leaves are broadly cordate, green to grayish green, and variously hairy. The leaves are usually dead by the time the plant flowers. In early summer or early summer, the flower stalks grow to produce mauve to purple flowers in large umbels. White-flowered varieties are also known. The photos show the garden variety 'Mount Everest'.
