The One-leaf onion belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed along the west coast of the United States, from California to Oregon. It grows in pine forests, evergreen forests, and shrubby areas, and is 45-60 cm tall. The leaves are narrow, and only one is produced from each bulb. In spring, it grows a scape and produces small, pale pink flowers in umbels at the tip. It has a slight onion odor.
