It grows in sandy gravel areas with summer and winter rainfall and grows to about 45 cm tall. It has no stem, blue-green leaves with small white spines on both sides, and blooms from August to September with vermilion, orange, or yellow flowers. In Japan, it is horticulturally known as "帝王錦".
