アフリカの南部に広く分布しています。雑木林や草原、岩礫地などに生え、高さは４５センチほどになります。茎はなく、葉は先端が赤味を帯びた濃い緑色で、下部は淡い緑色に退色し、うっすらと白い斑点が入ります。分枝した茎頂に総状花序をだし、赤色から黄色までの花を咲かせます。耐乾性と耐塩性があり、海岸沿いの庭に植えても育ちます。英名で「ソープアロエ」と呼ばれているのは、このアロエの樹液が水に触れると石けんのような泡を出すことに由来しています。

ユリ科アロエ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aloe maculata (syn. Aloe saponaria)。英名は Soap aloe、Zebra aloe。

The Soap aloe (Aloe maculata) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is widely distributed in southern Africa. It grows in thickets, grasslands, and rocky gravels, and is about 45 cm tall. The leaves are dark green with a reddish tinge at the tip, fading to light green at the bottom with faint white spots. It produces racemes at the tops of branched stems with red to yellow flowers. It is drought and salt tolerant and can be planted in coastal gardens. The English name "soap aloe" is derived from the fact that the sap of this aloe produces a soap-like foam when it comes into contact with water.
