南アフリカのケープ地方の南西部にだけ分布しています。山地の急峻な砂礫地に生え、３〜５メートルほどになります。木化した茎の先に、紐状の葉を向かい合う扇のように２列につけます。８月から１０月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして橙赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。園芸上では、「おとめのまいおうぎ（乙女の舞扇）」と呼ばれます。

ユリ科アロエ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Aloe plicatilis。英名は Fan aloe。

Fan aloe (Aloe plicatilis) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen herb that is endemic to the southwestern part of Cape Province in South Africa. This herb grows on steep screes, and it can reach 3-5 m in height. The leaves are tape-like, arranged in double rows which give the appearance of fans, on the woody stems. The flowering stalks are borne and the tubular orenge-red flowers bloom from August to October.
