ハワイ諸島のカウアイ島とニイハウ島が原産です。茎は多肉質で、基部は球状、頂部に向かってだんだん細くなり、高さはふつう１〜２メートルです。茎の先端に鮮やかな葉をコンパクトなロゼット状につきます。９月から１１月ごろ、芳香のある黄色い花を葉腋に咲かせます。このただ一つの花粉媒介者は、現在は絶滅している「スズメガ」の一種と考えられています。そのため、人間が人為的に受粉したときにだけ、個体は種子を生産できます。

キキョウ科ブリガミア属の常緑低木で、学名は Brighamia insignis。英名は Alula、Vulcan palm、Cabbage on a stick。

The Alula (Brighamia insignis) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the islands of Kauai and Niihau. The stem is succulent, bulbous at the bottom and tapers toward the top, and usually 1-2 m in height. It bears a compact rosette of fleshy leaves atop of stem. The fragrant yellow flowers bloom in the leaf axils from September to November. Its only pollinator is thought a certain type of now-extinct hawk moth. Therefore, individuals only produce seed when artificially pollinated by humans.
