The "Amami-ashibi" (Pieris amamioshimensis) belongs to Ericacea (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is an endemic species of Amami Oshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Although it was previously considered the same species as "Ryukyu-ashibi" (Pieris koidzumiana), DNA analysis in 2010 confirmed it to be a new species. It grows on rocky slopes near the summit of Mount Jiwa and reaches a height of 2 to 5 m. Its leaves are lanceolate, slightly wider than those of "Ryukyu-ashibi", and characterized by inconspicuous serrations. From February to April, it produces panicles at the tips of its branches, bearing white, urn-shaped flowers. The corolla is shallowly 5-lobed. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) in the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List.
