"Ama-cha" (Hydrangea serrata var. thunbergii) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed to Kanto and Chubu regions, in Honshu of Japan. It rarely grows along valleys in mountainous areas and grows 70 to 100 cm tall. It is a variant of the "Yama-ajisai". It is similar in appearance to the "Yama-ajisai", but the leaves contain Phyllodulcin (sweet constituent). When these leaves are dried and fermented, they produce "Ama-cha" (hydrangea tea) which is poured over a statue of Buddha on April 8, the day of the Buddha's Birthday.
