The "Amami-kusa-ajisai" (Cardiandra amamiohsimensis) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Amami Oshima in the Nansei Islands of Japan. It grows on rocks and damp cliffs along mountain streams and is 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate and alternate, with fine white hairs on the surface and serrated edges. From August to October, small, pale red or white flowers bloom in panicles at the top of the stem. The flowers have no ornamental flowers, only bisexual flowers.
