The "Ama-nyuu" (Angelica edulis) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in Hokaido, Hinshu and the Mt. Ishizuchi in Shikoku, Japan. This herb grows in mountain grasslands or forest edges, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The stem is branched at the upper parts, and the leaves are once to twice trifoliate. The leaflets are broad ovate with cordate leaf bases. The base of petiole is vaginal. The large compound umbels are borne and the small white flowers bloom from July to September. The Japanese name "nyuu" is derived from Ainu language "chi-suye".
