"Amami-seishika" (Rhododendron latoucheae var. amamiense) belongs to the Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Amami Ooshima in the Satsunan Islands. This tree grows on riparian rocky places and in riparian woodlands, and can reach 2-5 m in height. The leaves are narrow oblong, leathery with longish acute tips, and arranged in alternate intensively at the terminal twigs. The 1-4, white or pale pink flowers bloom atop of twigs from March to May. The coralla has pale yellowish green mottles on the inside of upper part. The flower has ten stamens.
