The "Amami-sumire" (Viola amamiana) belongs to Violaceae (the Violet family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is endemic to Amami Oshima and the northern part of Okinawa Island in Japan. It grows on rocky surfaces along mountain streams and reaches a height of 3 to 5 cm. The leaves are ovate, 5 to 10 mm long, and have coarse serrations along the edges. From around May to June, it extends a flower stalk and produces white flowers. The petals are white with a slightly greenish base, and the bases of the labellum and lateral petals feature reddish-purple stripes. The bases of the lateral petals are glabrous, while the labellum is smaller and broader than the other petals, with a lanceolate shape. It is characterized by a short, white spur. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
