The Amazon frogbit (Hydrocharis laevigata) belongs to Hydrocharitaceae (the Frogbit family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Mexico to tropical America. It grows in freshwater areas with slow currents in flatlands and floats on the surface of the water. It is distributed as an ornamental plant in Japan, and abandoned plants have naturalized in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The submerged runners grow horizontally, and roots and 3 to 8 leaves develop from each node in a rosette shape. The leaves are circular, about 1 cm in diameter, and often have blackish mottling on the surface. The underside of the leaf has an air sac (floating sac). The white female and male flowers bloom from June to September.
