わが国の奄美群島の固有種です。海岸近くの林縁などに生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。枝は黒色または暗褐色で、強い棘があります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、菱状卵形の小葉が１３〜１５個つきます。３月から４月ごろ、枝先に散房花序をだし、小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。果実はほぼ球形の分果です。

ミカン科サンショウ属の落葉低木で、学名は Zanthoxylum amamiense。英名はありません。

The "Amami-zansho" (Zanthoxylum amamiense) belongs to Rutaceae (the Citrus family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan's Amami Islands. It grows along forest edges near the coast and reaches a height of 2 to 4 m. The branches are black or dark brown and bear sharp thorns. The leaves are odd-pinnate, with 13 to 15 rhomboid-ovate leaflets. From around March to April, it produces corymbs at the tips of its branches, bearing small yellow-green flowers. The fruit is a nearly spherical schizocarp.
