オーストラリアの東部と北部が原産です。深さ１．５メートルほどの緩やかな流れに生えます。匍匐枝は浮遊して、長さ２メートルになります。葉は卵形で基部は心形、円鋸歯状の縁と長い葉柄があります。花は黄色で鋸歯状の縁があり、春から秋に咲きます。和名の「アメリカあさざ」は、日本へ初めてもたらされたのがアメリカからのルートだったためと考えられます。

Wavy marshwort (Nymphoides crenata) belongs to the Menyanthaceae family. It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern and northern Australia. This herb grows in slow-flowing water to about 1.5 m deep. The stolons are floating to 2 m long. The leaves are ovate with cordate bases and crenate margins, and have long petioles. The flowers are yellow with laciniate margins, and bloom from spring to fall. The Japanese name is thought to be the first route brought to Japan from the United States.
