北アメリカの西部、アラスカ州からブリティッシュコロンビア州、南へはカリフォルニア州、東はロッキー山脈まで分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の草原に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉はほとんどが根生し、長い葉柄があります。夏のあいだ中、密な円筒形から長楕円形の花序に、白色からピンク色がかった花を咲かせます。この植物は、山岳西部に住むアメリカ先住民の重要な食料でした。根は生食やローストして、種子は乾燥させた後挽いて粉にしてパンを作るのに利用されました。

タデ科イブキトラノオ属の多年草で、学名は Bistorta bistortoides (syn. Polygonum bistortoides)。英名は American bistort、Western bistort。

American bistort (Bistorta bistortoides) belongs to the family Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western North America; from Alaska and British Columbia south into California and east into the Rocky Mountains. This herb grows in subalpine to alpine meadows, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are mostly basal with long petioles. The white to pinkish flowers bloom in the dense cylindrical to oblong inflorescence throughtout the summer. It was an important food plant used by American Indians living in the Mountain West. The roots are used for raw or fire-roasted food, and the seeds can be dried and ground into flour and used to make bread.
