北アメリカの西部に分布しています。砂地の海岸や砂丘などに生え、高さは５〜３０センチほどになります。木質の基部から外側へ広がり、ひれ伏します。葉は多肉質で、掌状に分裂し、さらに３個の卵形で疎らな鋸歯のある小葉に分裂します。小葉は表面は無毛ですが、裏面は白色の伏毛があります。夏、茎頂に複散形花序をだし、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。果実は倒卵形で球状の集合体を形成します。

セリ科ハマボウフウ属の多年草で、学名は Glehnia littoralis ssp. leiocarpa。英名は American silvertop。

American silvertop (Glehnia littoralis ssp. leiocarpa) belongs to the Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western North America. This herb grows in sandy beaches and dunes and can reach 5-30 cm in height. It is prostrate, spreading outward from woody base. The leaves are fleshy, divided pinnately, and divided again to 3 egg-shaped leaflets with coarse teeth. The leaflets have hairless above, and white matted hairs beneath. The compound umbels are borne on the stem apices and bloom small white flowers in summer. The fruits are obovate and form spherical aggregate.
