ブラジル南東部からアルゼンチン北部が原産で、わが国には江戸時代に渡来しました。暖地では庭木や街路樹として植えられ、鹿児島県の県木にもなっています。６月から９月ごろ、丸みのある蝶形の真っ赤な花を咲かせます。花は食用にもなり、サラダや煮物にします。別名で「かいこうづ（海紅豆）」とも呼ばれますが、本当の「かいこうづ」は「なんばんあかあずき（Adenanthera pavonina）」を指すそうです。 |

マメ科デイゴ属の落葉低木で、学名は Erythrina crista-galli。英名は Coral tree。 |

The Coral tree (Erythrina crista-galli) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to south-eastern Brazil and northern Argentine. This tree was introduced into Japan in Edo Era (1603-1868). It is planted as a garden tree or a roadside tree in temparate areas. The rounded papilionaceous, bright red flowers come in June to September. They are edible and used as a salad or a cooked food. |
