The Coral tree (Erythrina crista-galli) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to south-eastern Brazil and northern Argentine. This tree was introduced into Japan in Edo Era (1603-1868). It is planted as a garden tree or a roadside tree in temparate areas. The rounded papilionaceous, bright red flowers come in June to September. They are edible and used as a salad or a cooked food.
