アメリカの東部、ニューファウンドランド島からフロリダ半島南部にかけて分布しています。東部に自生する他の樹木よりも、温度に対する適応性があり、広範囲に分布します。材質が軟らかいことから、「シルバーメープル（Acer saccharinum）」とともに、ソフトメープルに分類されます。葉は６〜１３センチくらいで、ふつうには３裂し、５裂のもあります。裂片は軟らかく、先端が尖り、秋には鮮やかな紅色に、また橙色や黄色にも紅葉します。３月から４月ごろ、鮮やかな赤色の花を咲かせ、６月に果実が熟します。名前は、満久崇麿著「同名異木のはなし」のなかで、「葉脈に赤色の筋が出ることから」とあります。別名で「べにかえで（紅楓）」とも呼ばれます。

The Red maple (Acer rubrum) belongs to the Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the eastern United States; from Newfoundland Island south to the southern Florida Peninsula. This tree has a temperature tolelance to a wide range of growing environment, and it is found in widely areas. It has a soft timber and it is classified as a Soft maple similar to Silver maple (Acer saccharinum). The leaves are 6-13 cm long and usually divided into three lobes, occasionally five partite lobes. They are soft and having acute tips. And they turn bright red, orange or yellow. The bright red flowers bloom from March to April, and the fruits are ripen in June.
