アメリカの南東部のアラバマ・ジョージア州からテネシー州それにカナダにかけて分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１２０センチほどになります。茎は赤味を帯び、節ごとにジグザクの屈曲しています。葉は卵形で鋸歯があり、互生します。春から晩春にかけて、総状花序を下垂させ、「あしび（馬酔木）」のような白い花を咲かせます。

ツツジ科イワナンテン属の常緑小低木で、学名は Leucothoe fontanesiana。英名は Highland doghobble、Doghobble。

The Highland doghobble (Leucothoe fontanesiana) belongs to Ericaceae (the Heath family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the south-eastern United States, from Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee north to into Canada. This shrub grows in mountains and can reach about 120 cm in height. Stem is reddish and zigzags turning at each leaf node. Laeves are alternate, ovate with fine toothed edges. During mid spring to late spring, Japanese andromeda-like white flowers are seen in drooping racemes.
