南アメリカが原産です。低地から山地の中腹に生え、高さは１０メートル以上になります。成長が早く、発芽から３年ほどで果実をつけます。葉は卵状長楕円形で対生します。ほとんど一年を通じて葉腋から総状花序をだし、黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は濃橙色から赤色に熟し、長さは３〜４センチ、果肉はクリーム色です。果実はふつう香りづけに使われます。「アメイシャ」はブラジルでのポルトガル語の呼び名です。

The Monk's plum (Bunchosia armeniaca) belongs to the family Malpighiaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to South America. This tree grows in low to middle elevations of mountains and can reach up to 10 m in height. It is precocious and fruiting within 3 year from germination. The leaves are ovate-oblong and opposite. The racemes are borne on the axiles and bloom yellow flowers throughout most of the year. The fruits are ripen in dark orange to red, 3-4 cm long with a cream-colored flesh. They are more commonly used as a flavoring. Monk's plum is also called "Ameixa" that is a Portuguese diminutive in Brazil.
