北アメリカの太平洋岸に分布しています。ミズバショウ属は本種とわが国の「みずばしょう（水芭蕉」の２種しかありません。水辺や湿地に生え、高さは３０〜１５０センチになります。地下茎から大きな槍形の葉を伸ばします。全草にスカンクのような臭気があります。春に、黄色い仏炎苞に包まれた目立たない花を咲かせます。別名で「こがねみずばしょう（黄金水芭蕉）」とも呼ばれます。

Skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanum) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Pacific Coast of North America. The genus Lysichiton consists of only two species, "Amrican skunk cabbage" and "Japanse skunk cabbage" (Lysichitum camtschatcense). This herb grows in water's edges or marshes, and it can reach 30-150 cm in height. The large lance-shaped leaves are borne at the rootstocks. The whole plant has strong odor like skunk. The inconspicuous flowers with large yellow spathes bloom in spring.
