北アメリカ原産で、わが国には大正時代に帰化しました。いまでは本州から九州の各地に生育しています。名前は、葉が「せんだん（栴檀）」に似ているところから。田んぼのあぜなどの湿地で、窒素分の多いところを好みます。９月から１０月にかけて、多数に分かれた茎の先に黄色の花を咲かせますが、総苞片が光背のように広がっているのが特徴です。

キク科センダングサ属の一年草で、学名は Bidens frondosa。英名は Beggar ticks。

The Beggar ticks (Bidens frondosa) belongs to the Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to North America. It was introduced into Jpan in the days of Taisho Era (about 100 years ago). Nowadays, it grows from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. The Japanese name is derived from the leaves of White cedar. This herb grows in rice field linches and wet fields, and prefers to nitrogen-rich soils. The yellow flowers bloom atop of branched stems from September to October. The involucal bracts extend like the halo.
