The Queen of the prairie (Filipendula rubra) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the central to northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. It primarily grows in calcareous soils of wetlands and wet meadows, reaching heights of 1.8 to 2.4 m. The stem is reddish, hairless, and branched. The leaves are pinnately compound with 7 to 9 lanceolate leaflets. The terminal leaflet is abnormally large and 7 to 9-lobed. From July to August, it produces a terminal panicle, bearing small, fragrant, pale pink flowers.
