カナダの南東部からアメリカの北東部に分布しています。峡谷や高原などに生え、高さは１８〜３０メートルになります。樹皮は暗灰色で平滑、狭い鱗片状に剥離するようになります。葉は広卵形から円形で、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。初夏、緑色がかった葉状の苞から長い花梗の花序を下垂させ、黄白色の花を咲かせます。花はミツバチの好物で、強い芳香のある蜂蜜が作られます。

シナノキ科シナノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Tilia americana。英名は American basswood、American linden。

The American basswood (Tilia americana) belongs to Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to south-eastern Canada and the north-eastern USA. This tree grows in valleys or uplands and can reach 18-30 m in height. The barks are dark gray, smooth and becomming furrowed into narrow scaly ridges. The leaves are broad-ovate to round with coasely toothed edges. The yellowish-white flowers come in long-stalked clusters hanging from leafy greenish bract in early summer. They are favored by bees and produce a strongly flavored honey.
