北アメリカに分布しています。湿地や湿り気のある林に生え、高さは５〜７メートルほどになります。葉は楕円形で、対生または輪生します。６月から７月ごろ、球形花序に小さな黄白色の筒状花を咲かせます。とびだした雄しべが目立ちます。果実は８月から１１月ごろ、暗褐色に熟します。食べると有毒だそうです。

アカネ科ケファランツス属の落葉低木で、学名は Cephalanthus occidentalis。英名は Buttonbush、Honey bells。

The Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to North America. This tree grows in swamps and wet woodlands, and can reach 5-7 m in height. The leaves are elliptic and opposite or whorled. The spherical inflorescences are borne and bloom small yellowish-white tubular flowers from June to July. The exserted stamens are conspicuous. The fruits are ripen in August to November. They are poisonous if eated.
