北アメリカの太平洋岸、カナダのブリティッシュコロンビア州からアメリカ西部、メキシコの中部に分布しています。海岸沿いから亜高山帯の湿り気のあるところに生え、高さは２５〜６０メートルになります。樹皮は赤褐色で厚く、深い割れ目が入ります。葉は長さ２〜３センチの線形で、ほとんど２列につきます。果実は球果で、鱗片のあいだから独特な苞が出るのが特徴です。

マツ科トガサワラ属の常緑高木で、学名は Pseudotsuga menziesii。英名は Douglas fir、Douglas spruce、Oregon pine。

Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Pacific Coast of North America; from British Columbia to the western United States and central Mexico. This tree grows in the wet areas from near coast to subalpine, and it can reach 25-60 m in height. The barks are red-brown, thick, and deep furrowed. The leaves are linear 2-3 cm long, and mostly arranged in two rows. The fruits are strobiles which having characteristic of the distinctive bracts between scales.
