The American mistletoe (Phoradendron leucarpum) belongs to Viscaceae (the Mistletoe family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed in the United States and Mexico. It is a semiparasitic small shrub, growing on the branches of other trees and adhering to them with parasitic roots, reaching up to 1 m in length. The leaves are elliptic, leathery, and opposite. The fruit is a white berry that contains a single sticky seed, which easily sticks to branches after being eaten and excreted by birds and other predators. The fruit is poisonous to humans, but edible to certain birds and wildlife.
