ブラジルを中心とするアマゾン川流域に分布しています。高さは５０センチほどになります。葉は肉厚で、縁には鋭い棘があり内側に湾曲します。茎の先に穂状花序をつけ、淡い紫色の花を咲かせます。果実は、小さなパイナップルのような集合果ですが、小さくて食用にはなりません。別名で「ミニパイナップル」とも呼ばれます。

Miniature pineapple (Ananas nanus) belongs to Bromeliacea (the Pine apple family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to the Amazonian region where center on Brazil. This herb can reach about 50 cm in height. The leaves are fleshy and inflected inside with acute spines on edges. The pale purple flowers bloom on the spikes. The fruits are small aggregate and resemble to pineapple though they are unsuited for food.
