南・北アメリカが原産です。わが国へも帰化していて、各地の荒れ地や道端で見ることができます。高さは４０〜１００センチほどになり、葉は菱状卵形で先端が尖ります。７月から１１月ごろ、茎の上部や葉腋から穂状花序をだして、黄緑色の花を咲かせます。よく似た「ほそあおげいとう（細青鶏頭）」は、花序が細く多くの横枝があることで区別されます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

ヒユ科ヒユ属の一年草で、学名は Amaranthus retroflexus。英名は Pigweed、Redroot pigweed。

The Pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus) belongs to Portulaceae (the Purslane family). It is an annual herb that is native to South and North America. It has also been naturalized into Japan and can be seen in wastelands and roadsides around the world. The height is about 40 to 100 cm, and the leaves are rhombic ovate and pointed. From July to November, spike-like inflorescences are borne on the upper stems and axils and bloom yellow-green flowers. The similar "Smooth pigweed" (Amaranthus patulus) is distinguished by its thin inflorescences and many lateral branches. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
