わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。道ばたや丘陵、低山などに生え、高さは５～１０センチになります。全体に軟毛が多く、匍匐枝があります。葉は幅２センチくらいの心円形です。３月から４月ごろ、淡紫色を帯びた小さな白色の花を咲かせます。側弁には少しの毛が生えます。花柱の先はカギ形に曲がり、距はずんぐりしています。果実は小さい球形の蒴果で、粗い毛が密生します。

スミレ科スミレ属の多年草で、学名は Viola hondoensis。英名はありません。

"Aoi-sumire" ( Viola hondoensis) belongs to the Violaceae (the Violet family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb grows on roadsides, in hillsides and low mountains, and it ca reach 5-10 cm in height. The plant is pubescent and has runners. The leaves are round-cordate about 2 cm wide. The pale purple tinged white, small flowers bloom March to April. The lateral petals are lightly bearded. The style is hooked and the spur is heavyset. The fruits are small globose capsules and have dense rough hairs.
